After such a long time since AOE3 (yes there have been DE for older games) coming back with a new Age of game and try to revolutionize its genre and time period would have been a disaster. When you hear "Age of" you think about archers, cavarly, spearman, history, etc. There are a lot of people that hopped they would go forward in time to WW1/2 (most of them because of the original artwork) but it would have been a crazy risk to do so for AOE4 as the whole franchise is clearly not about that.
They played it safe with AOE4 and they made the right choice.
